"On October 30, 2014 I was driving home from work on Highway 400, eastbound in between Pratt and Wichita. My phone for whatever reason had fallen onto the floorboard of the passenger side so I reached over to get it and when I looked up, it seemed like I was about two feet away from the back end of a semi. It was more like twenty yards, but when you’re going that fast it seems like it is just right in front of you. The semi had just merged onto the highway after pulling over to do a weigh-in, so it wasn’t up to speed yet and when I hit the back of it, it was probably going around 30mph. I was going about 80mph. I pretty much walked away with three or four scratches on my hand.

I was pretty amped up with adrenaline right when it happened but I realized real quick that I was pretty lucky that there was nobody else in that vehicle. I was pretty lucky. There were four of us that usually carpooled but for whatever reason that day, I drove separate. If not, more than likely the guys that would have been in the passenger front seat and passenger back seat would not have made it out of that accident.

After it happened, I got out and walked around. And people were coming up and asking who was in the vehicle and I told them it was me. Everyone was like, ‘No way, there is no way you’re walking around!’ I’ll never forget that feeling of adrenaline. That was probably the biggest rush I’ll ever have, adrenaline-wise, running into a semi. You just don’t do that every day.
The EMS crew highly encouraged me to take that ambulance ride, even if nothing more than to check my overall well-being. So I went to the hospital, they checked everything. There was quite the team ready for me because they had heard what had happened and nobody could believe that I was the one coming in from that accident. No other injuries, just a couple of cuts on my hand.

You can tell by the one part of the picture where it shows the headrest of where I sat and everything else around where I was sitting was just shredded. Easily a miracle.

I have three boys, married. At that time my boys would have been twelve, ten and ten months. My wife was freaking out, as a lot of people were when they heard. And when they saw the pictures of the accident the reaction was, “Wow!”

You definitely think about it. You think, ‘Man, why was that guy not in my car? Why were all three of them not in my car that day?’ You think about that kind of stuff. You go back to your ego a little bit and want to say, ‘Why me?’ I think I’ll think about that for years to come.
When you have something like that happen to you it’s not like hey, it’s over. You think, ‘Yeah it’s pretty crazy that I survived that. And why did I survive that?’ Who really knows that answer. You hope you know. Maybe part of it is the way you live your life, but it’s a mystery.
I’m very grateful. Did it make me closer to Him? I don’t know that I can say it did that. But it was definitely a miracle. I feel like he had a hand in it for sure. It changed me in the aspect of being very attentive when I’m driving. Don’t mess with your phone when you’re driving. There are plenty of other stories out there where people didn’t make it when they even just looked down at their phone, and certainly when they were texting.

I was raised going to church every Sunday. I brought God into my life when I was 16 years old. Now that I’m older, I believe that I don’t necessarily have to go to church to have a relationship with God. But I do believe that if you do go to church you get that fuel to get you back on track and rejuvenate. If you’re raised with it and you know the gist of everything, I think that’s huge for anybody so I was glad that I had that, that I was raised in the church and know that kind of stuff.
You want to think that your chances of surviving something like what I survived are better with knowing God versus not knowing God. I survived that thing because of God, I do know that. I survived that accident because God had his hand on it."
